JEFFERSON COUNTY - Southeast Nebraska is bracing for another anticipated patch of winter weather and extreme cold to roll in this week, with Fairbury starting to see some snow falling this afternoon around 4:30 Monday afternoon.

The area saw a small slate of snow accumulate overnight, causing many area schools to operate under a two-hour delay. The weather has been more severe further up north towards the metro: Crete Public Schools canceled classes outright Monday.

Snow plows fueling up for what figures to be an eventful few days around this part of the state: expected snow totals range between 3 and 7 inches between Monday night and Thursday morning.

It's cold, but it's going to get colder: temperatures have hovered in the single digits here all day Monday but that's expected to drop, with many areas in the region, including in the Crete area, under an Extreme Cold Warning until at least noon Tuesday - that means wind chills could make the temperature feel like it's south of 30 degrees below zero.

Most other areas are in an Extreme Cold Watch according to data shared by Jefferson and Saline Counties Emergency Management. Those high wind chills will accompany extreme cold temperatures from Tuesday afternoon until Thursday morning.
