HASTINGS, Neb. - The Aurora Huskies overcame a fourth-quarter charge from Adams Central to notch a 49-43 road win to open the season.

The victory marked the 500th career win for head coach Kevin Asher, who is in his fourth season at Aurora after previous stops at Wood River, Hastings St. Cecilia, Norfolk Catholic and Elm Creek. The win also put an end to four-straight defeats for the Huskies against the Patriots.

Aurora blitzed Adams Central to start the game. 6-foot-9 senior Booker Scheierman started the game by blocking 6-foot-9 Hunter Nepple, driving the other way and converting an and-one basket and free throw. Ryan Staehr followed with hot three-point shooting to establish an 18-9 lead after one quarter.

Adams Central slowed down the Huskies in the second quarter and surrendered just six points to set up a close 24-20 game at halftime.

The teams traded blows in the third quarter. Scheierman committed his fourth foul late in the quarter, which sent him to the bench and kept the Patriots in the game.

Down 39-33 to start the fourth quarter, Adams Central scored six-straight points to tie the game. Asher called timeout, put Scheierman back in and the Huskies went on a 10-2 run to separate and get the win.
