Gov. Pillen holds news conference for final approval of LB 34
NEBRASKA -- Gov. Jim Pillen held a news conference at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday to discuss LB 34 after it got the final approval by Nebraska senators in the special legislative session.
The special session aimed at fixing LB 34 - the bill focused on Nebraska’s property tax crisis.
Sen. Lou Ann Linehan said that the really big things that happened were 40-45% of people that weren’t claiming their credit are now going to get it on their property tax statement, there are caps on spending, and anything over 3% in revenue growth can go to property tax relief.
“I am very hopeful that today will turn out to provide a lot more tax relief than people realize,” Linehan said.
“Everyone here knows we have an extraordinary crisis," Pillen. "We have a property tax crisis, and all of us are working hard for the Nebraskans who don’t have lobbyists, who don’t have special interests, standing up and talking for them.”
He said that it’s important for 45% of Nebraskans who can’t afford to hire an account or “can’t afford to do this or that,” get a 20% property tax cut.
Pillen also mentioned that it’s time to say “no” to property tax increases.
Stating that it's not time to celebrate too much, Pillen said time will tell how Nebraskans judge this bill and how it affects everyone.
“It really is a good day for Nebraska property tax payers,” said Sen. Tom Briese. “LB 34 represents a nice win for Nebraskans.”
Pillen concluded the news conference by signing LB 34/LB 34A along with LB 2, and LB 3.
