BEATRICE – This year’s Beatrice Clean City large item collection was a success…..and one that was lower in costs to the city.  Street Superintendent Jason Moore provided a report on the early May program to the Beatrice Board of Public Works, Wednesday.

Moore said there were 1,139 addresses residential addresses participating this year…..down about five-percent from last year. "We had less total man-hours and if you look across....the miles were less, lower hours. We had 80 total loads and 10 roll-offs of mattresses."

The number of old mattresses people brought to the landfill was comparable to past years.  Although the number of truck loads of items…80…was down from last year’s 92…the overall weight of items was up.

"One hundred and 66-point 94 tons. That's the most tonnage we've had in the past ten years....a pretty substantial jump."  Moore suspects more of the large items were disposed of....which is the reason for the program.

This year’s project used less fuel and fewer work hours. Property owners who participated could register online, or by phone. Moore says he’d like to see more online registration.  "We had more people this year that had piles in front of their home that did not register. And when they would call in and say you didn't come and get my stuff...I'd pull it up and look, and say you didn't register. When you e-mail your address, you will get an e-mail confirmation sent to you."

There were no accidents or injuries conducting the program, this year.
