BEATRICE – Some Beatrice second graders got to briefly take over city government, Monday night.

They were named Mayors for a Day by Mayor Bob Morgan for their efforts to clear litter from various areas of the community during the annual Great American Clean Up, through Keep Beatrice Beautiful. KBB Executive Director Ashley Hawkes talked about the results between April 11th and the 18th.

"Four different (school) buildings participated, and I believe they collected about twenty full bags of recyclables....so much more than expected and they were really excited about that."

The youthful Mayors named were Trenton Edwards, Sydney Faust and Katherine Perry….all from Lincoln Elementary School. Paddock Lane second graders Henry Erikson, Benedict Hespen and Emilia Mahrt were named Mayors. Kaidence Fairbanks of St. Joseph Catholic School and Sydney Agena from St. Paul’s Lutheran School are also Mayors for a Day.

The students received certificates from Keep Beatrice Beautiful, a KBB T-shirt, gifts from Runza and Dairy Queen and other items.

Another tire amnesty recycling event is coming up August 8th and 9th, at the Gage County Fairgrounds…accepting up to 200 tons of recycled tires.
This past April, an electronics waste collection event brought in over four thousand pounds of material.
