Fairbury to host community walking challenge
FAIRBURY, Neb. -- The Fairbury Community Building is putting together a walking challenge for a chance to win prizes and get your steps in.
“So, Laura Bedlan at the city offices and I began discussing and we involved Jen Johnson at the Burkley Fitness Center, and we came up with an idea for a walking challenge,” said Lana Likens, Director of Public Relations at JCH&L. “The City and Jefferson Community Health and Life are joining together, cooperating to do a Community Building Walking Challenge. What we’re offering is that anybody who is interested can come, they do need to sign up and there will be a board where they can put their name and keep track of their laps. And the person, as we will start Dec. 1, who at the end of December, who has the most laps in are going to get a prize.”
The prize includes a couple of free meals at local establishments or through senior diners at the community building.
“It is free to register, there's absolutely no cost or obligation and if people want to come in and do one lap, that is fine,” Likens said. “There are decals on the walls that will tell people how many laps make a mile or how many laps would get them to Crystal Springs if they pretend they are walking outside and going to Crystal Springs.”
Participants can do the challenge during the gym’s open hours Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
“There are also exercises along the way so if someone wants to walk a little ways and then stop and do some different exercises, there are some exercises that are recommended by Jen Johnson, our Burkley Fitness Center manager, and those exercises give people a chance to exercise some different muscles than what walking exercises.” Likens said.
Likens said the motivational quotes on the walls of the gym can inspire people participating in the challenge.
“There are some really great quotes that they put around the walls, ‘if you can’t do great things, do small things in a great way’ and those kinds of things,” Likens said. “Just some kinds of things to be motivational as people are in here using the facility.”
Participants can sign up through the senior diners or the city office. Registration is completely free.
