BEATRICE - A pedestrian was killed and a second pedestrian seriously hurt in a highway accident southwest of Manhattan, Kansas yesterday.

The Kansas Highway Patrol said the accident happened on Kansas Highway 18, just east of Scenic Drive.

A pedestrian was checking his vehicle on the left inside shoulder of the highway from an accident.  A second pedestrian was checking her vehicle from a car-deer accident that had just happened.

Another vehicle struck the remains of a deer, lost control, and struck both pedestrians.

The Kansas Highway Patrol said the pedestrian who was killed was 20-year-old Jhon Paulo Reid, of Manhattan.  He was taken to Via Christi Hospital where he died.  The second pedestrian seriously injured was 24-year-old Jarde Hill, of Manhattan.  She was also taken to Via Christi for treatment.

The driver of a 2003 Ford Explorer that struck the pedestrians….42-year-old Brandon Hanschu, of Manhattan, was not injured. 

The accident happened at about 5:30 a.m., Thursday.
