Man dies from injuries caused in officer-involved shooting in Lincoln
LINCOLN, Neb. -- Officials announced that the man that was injured in the officer-involved shooting in Lincoln on May 1 has died.
The Lancaster County Sheriff's Office said that 35-year-old Chace Abney, of New York, died from his injuries on Saturday. His autopsy is set for May 8.
The Lincoln/Lancaster County said they were looking through surveillance on a motel room for a separate investigation on May 1.
Authorities said they left the motel to go to a parking lot on 28th St. The shooting happened near the intersection of northwest 27th and West O Streets in western Lincoln.
The Nebraska State Patrol said an investigator saw a firearm in the suspect's possession.
The Lancaster County Sheriff's Office said Abney fired one round at the officers.
LCSO said that the officers were wearing vests and badges identifying them as law enforcement and that they were giving loud, verbal commands to exit the vehicle.
Abney reportedly refused to comply with demands and pulled a 9mm pistol allegedly pointing it at the officers. LCSO said that Abney had fired one found from the pistol.
"One trooper and the LPD officer returned fire, striking Abney," said Sheriff Terry Wagner. "First aid was performed by the officers, and Abney was transported to an area hospital in critical condition with gunshot wounds."
Authorities said the gun that Abney used to shoot at officers had been reported stolen out of Norfolk on May 1.
According to Wagner, Abney had outstanding warrants from other states that were not extraditable. It was also reported that Abney had drugs and drug paraphernalia in his vehicle.
Both officers involved have been placed on leave for the course of the investigation.
