LINCOLN, Neb. -- A local congressman is aiming to relocate a capital city post office, but says the building's postmaster is putting off meeting with him.

Nebraska's District One Rep. Mike Flood, says Lincoln's Haymarket Post Office sits on prime real estate, that if developed for entertainment purposes, would better serve Lincoln.

"I would leave it to the leadership of the city of Lincoln, and to the community and the citizens here to decide what the highest and best use is," Flood said. "A postal facility and a warehouse for mail does not make any sense."

According to Flood, his office reached out to the postmaster last summer about moving the Seventh and R Street facility after being contact by local business leaders, organizations and District One constituents supporting the idea.

Flood says at that time he was told "no." But after further communication, a meeting between Flood and the postmaster was scheduled for Thursday. However, he says the postmaster cancelled the meeting this morning and that he was told it couldn't be rescheduled for at least a month.

"I intend to work with all of my partners in Congress to get answers," Flood said. "But I think you have to start with your local postmaster. I owe it to him to visit about what the ideas are before I start talking to everybody in Congress about it. I just need to have a meeting, and I need to have a meeting to sit down and have a conversation about what could happen; and what do I need to do; and what do we need to do as a community to get there."

News Channel Nebraska has reached out to the postmaster's office to gain their perspective and is currently waiting to hear back.
