Huskers fall to No. 4 Ole Miss on Sunday

Nebraska concluded its weekend at the Cambria College Classic with a 14-5 loss to No. 4 Ole Miss at U.S. Bank Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Nebraska concluded its weekend at the Cambria College Classic with a 14-5 loss to No. 4 Ole Miss at U.S. Bank Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Nebraska (5-4-1) had five runs on eight hits, while Ole Miss (10-2) totaled 14 runs on 14 hits.

Caleb Clark dropped to 0-1 on the year, allowing eight runs and five hits in two outs. Michael Garza tossed 3.1 scoreless innings, scattering out four hits and a trio of walks. Jalen Worthley and Kyle Perry combined to pitch three innings, while Will Rizzo and JC Gutierrez teamed up to throw the final inning.

Brice Matthews went 3-for-3 at the plate with a home run, two RBI and three runs. Efry Cervantes was 1-for-4 with a solo home run, while Max Anderson had a 1-for-3 day with a double. Dylan Carey, Josh Caron and Casey Burnham also had a hit for the Big Red.

Ole Miss began the scoring in the bottom of the first with eight runs on six hits to jump ahead 8-0.

Burnham lined a single to center to open the third, before Matthews hit a towering two-run homer down the left-field line to plate Nebraska's first two runs of the day.

Cervantes led off the fifth with a solo homer over the wall in left-center to make it a five-run game. Back-to-back singles from Matthews and Carey brought the Huskers within 8-4 heading into the bottom of the fifth.

The Rebels answered immediately with a walk and a single to place runners on first and third with no outs. Kemp Alderman followed with a two-RBI single into left to grow the Ole Miss lead to 10-4.

An RBI groundout in the sixth joined with an RBI triple and passed ball in the seventh stretched the Rebel lead to 13-4.

The two teams exchanged runs in the eighth to clinch the 14-5 victory for the Rebels. Anderson doubled home Matthews in the top half, while an RBI single plated the 14th run for Ole Miss.

Nebraska continues play with a midweek series against Northern Colorado on Tuesday-Wednesday, March 7-8. First pitch of the home opener on Tuesday is set for 4:05 p.m. at Hawks Field.
