LINCOLN, Neb. -- A Lincoln Police Sgt. swam to assist a woman out of a lake following a single-vehicle accident.

A 27-year-old woman was driving a Hyundai Elantra heading east on Yankee Hill Road around 4:40 p.m. and tried turning south on Executive Woods Drive, according to authorities.

The Lincoln Police Department said the woman was driving faster than deemed safe for the icy conditions and was not able to make the turn.

LPD reported that at the time of the accident it was 23 degrees outside with windchill making it feel like 4 degrees, and there was periodic freezing precipitation.

After leaving the roadway, LPD said the vehicle struck an LES transformer on the southeast corner of the intersection and continued into a golf course water hazard.

According to authorities, a passerby called emergency services, reporting a car had driven into the pond and was sinking.

LPD said that Sgt. Tu Tran with LPD was in the area of 27th and Pine Lake Road, and had responded to the scene.

It was reported that when Tran arrived, he noted the vehicle was nearly submerged, with only the rear driver's window and trunk visible above the surface.

LPD said that Tran removed his police equipment and continued into the pond to assist the woman.

After swimming to the vehicle, LPD said Tran saw the vehicle had sank further, at which point only the trunk was visible.

Tran was reportedly able to unlock the rear door. LPD said he was not able to see into the murky water, but was able to feel a leg and reached inside the vehicle.

LPD said Tran pulled the woman out of the car before it sank completely under the surface.

Officials said Tran helped the woman to the bank where others had gathered and helped her out of the water. Bystanders also reportedly helped Tran out of the water.

LFR and additional police personnel responded to the scene.

LPD said the driver was taken to a local hospital after being submerged in the frigid water. Tran reportedly went home for a new uniform and returned to work.

The Police Department said that Tran was also the officer who had entered the water on Sept. 3, 2022 to help a driver who suffered a medical episode and drove into a pond near 75th and Badger Road
