Man shoots fireworks, armed with crossbow in Tuesday night standoff in Beatrice
BEATRICE - Law enforcement in Beatrice dealt with a tense situation on Tuesday night.
According to a release on the Beatrice Police Department Facebook page, officers with the Beatrice Police Department and Gage County Sheriff's Office responded to the 400 Block of N. 17th St. for a subject in "mental distress" who barricaded himself in his home.
Upon arrival, officers were able to make contact with the subject. The subject then fired one bolt in the direction of the officers as they continued to try to talk him down, but the subject then ruptured a gas line inside of the house.
With respect to public safety, and other residences and citizens around the area, Beatrice Fire & Rescue were dispatched to shut off gas to the residence. The Beatrice SWAT team was able to vent gas from the residence.
The building then caught fire when the subject began shooting fireworks inside the residence and at the officers, causing the house to catch fire. Upon the building igniting, SWAT made entry to take the subject into custody.
Beatrice Fire & Rescue then took over the scene to extinguish the fire.
