LINCOLN, NE — The Meridian Mustangs saw their season come to a close Thursday at the NSAA State Volleyball Tournament in Lincoln.

Meridian fell to the Maywood-Hayes Center (MHC) Wolves who won the match 3-1 (18-25, 25-21, 25-14, 25-21).

The Mustangs started strong only ever trailing once — by a single point — in the opening set. That moment came with Meridian down 7-6 to which the Mustangs responded with a 6-0 run to take a 12-7 lead. Meridian would hold onto win the opening set 25-18.

Meridian took a 3-1 lead early in the second set, but the Wolves battled back to take a 7-6 lead. From there the teams traded points back and forth. Tied at 12, MHC took four of the next five points to earn a 16-13 advantage. They'd hold the Mustangs at bay and take set two 25-21.

MHC never trailed in third set after opening a 4-0 lead to a dominant 25-14 set three win.

Set four was tightly contested. Meridian led 18-16, but MHC then rattled off five points in a row to take a 21-18 lead — an advantage they wouldn't give up.

MHC advances to play Hartington Cedar Catholic in the semifinals. Meridian's season ends at 27-5.
