PAXTON - The Keystone-Lemoyne Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to several fires along the Burlington Northern-Santa Fe railroad tracks from North Shore to Cedar View at Lake McConaughy at 2:47 p.m. Tuesday.

Chief Ralph Moul says mutual aid was called from Ogallala, Brule, Big Springs, Lewellen, Oshkosh, Arthur, Grant, Madrid, Keith County Sheriff Department, Nebraska State Patrol, Emergency Management, Keith County Roads Department, Hendricks Flying from Grant, and the Federal Seat Plane from Valentine to help extinguish fires near North Shore and Spring Park.

According to Moul, the fires were started by a westbound burning coal car.

In total, 45 pieces of equipment and "many dedicated volunteers" responded to the fires. The fire was contained, but still smoldering in trees. No homes were damaged by the fires.

KLFD was also called to provide mutual aid for a wildfire in a river bottom northwest of Paxton. That fire was contained by 2:46 p.m.
