UPDATE: Firefighters battle blaze north of Hanover
HANOVER, KS — We now have more information on a fire which burned north of Hanover, Kansas Tuesday.
According to the Hanover Rural Fire Department, the fire started in the early afternoon when a burn from Monday flared back up.
Monday afternoon, there was virtually no wind, but Tuesday was a different story. Winds gusting from 40 to 50 miles per hour helped the fire spread quickly.
At one point, the fire jumped Yankee Road — a rural road north of Hanover, as it continued to spread.
The Hanover Rural FD says the flames claimed about 600 acres of land. Crews were on scene for about nine hours.
The storms that moved through Tuesday night did help provide relief to the firefighters.
In addition to Hanover Rural Fire, Marysville, Barnes, Greenleaf, Logan and Oketo fire departments and Farmers Co-op of Hanover from Kansas responded. The Fairbury, Odell and Steele City departments in Nebraska also assisted.
This was just part of a busy fire day in the region Tuesday. The Filley VFD battled a blaze which threatened structures while multiple crews battled three separate fires in Thayer County Tuesday.
