Edna Mae Day

Edna Mae Day, age 97 of Wymore peacefully passed away on Sunday, January 12, 2020 at the Good Samaritan Society in Beatrice. Edna Mae was born on a farm southeast of Barneston on January 4, 1923 to Eric Konrad and Jennie Theresia Swanson. She moved with her parents to a farm northwest of Barneston on the Big Blue River. Edna and her sister, Selma, attended Sandcut School until 1929 when her family moved to Wymore. Edna attended 2nd grade at East Ward School in Wymore and Wymore Public Schools from 3rd grade on. She graduated from Central High in Wymore in 1940. She worked a variety of jobs throughout her life including a paper carrier from 1933 to 1942, a tester at Marshall Produce, worked for the City of Wymore Federal WPA Food Stamp Program, worked at Ben Franklin Dime Store, was an operator for Lincoln Telephone Company, was a bookkeeper for Trump Grain Company, was employed at Parks Produce, and worked for the ASC (Agricultural Stabilization Conservation) office at various government grain bin sites in the county. On January 8, 1946, she was united in marriage to William S. Day. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Wymore American Legion Post 25, past president of BLF&E (Brotherhood of Locomotive Fireman & Enginemen) Railroad CB&Q, B&N – Wymore Division. She was also a Civil Defense volunteer messenger in Wymore during WWII and was a secretary for the Wymore Chamber of Commerce when there were 64 members. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, making wine, jam, and pickles, photography, and making sure no one left her house with empty arms or bellies. She loved caring for others.
Those left to mourn her passing are her sons, Don E. Day and wife Dee of Wymore and Dennis Day and wife Joyce of Beatrice; grandchildren, Dawn Renee Day, Addam (Brandy) Day, Tim Day (special friend Laurie Leners), Denielle (Scott) Trauernicht, Gina (Tim) Cook; great grandchildren, Jacob, Jordan, Jonathan, Elizabeth, Jayden, and Joshuah Harding, Addison and Wesdon Day, Graydon Day, Lauren, Natalie, and Lainey Trauernicht; several nieces and nephews and a host of extended family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William; sister, Selma Jensen; and brother, Eugene Swanson.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, January 18, 2020 at the Laughlin-Hoevet Funeral Home in Wymore with Chaplain Sharon Schuster officiating. Casual dress is recommended. Burial will be at the Barneston Cemetery. The body will lie in state at the Laughlin-Hoevet Funeral Home on Friday from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM with the family greeting relatives and friends from 6:00 to 7:30 PM, and one hour prior to the service Saturday. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to the Edna M. Day Scholarship Fund with the funeral home in charge.
