Ernest A. Wollenberg, 92 of Cedarwood Assisted Living, Fairbury Nebraska, passed away September 2, 2019 peacefully in his sleep. He was born May 8, 1927 to August and Sophie (Schroeder) Wollenberg at Hollenberg Kansas. Ernie attended Hanover Grade School and Hanover High School.

He was drafted in July of 1945. He served in World War II and was stationed in Korea. He was honorably discharged in February 1947.

After service, he worked with his dad in the blacksmith shop then went into farming.  After a few years later house cleaning and cooking for himself, he “went to find himself a cook”. He met the love of his life, Marjorie Gebhards. They were married on May 24, 1953. To this union there were six children. Ernie and Marjorie resided in Hollenberg Kansas for 66 years. Ernest was a farmer his entire life. He was an active member at the Zion State Line Lutheran Church. He served on the Hollenberg school board and later was on the Hanover school board. He was a substitute mail carrier for 15 years and sold Pioneer seed for 15 years. Ernie and Marjorie enjoyed dancing and playing cards with friends and neighbors. And he thoroughly enjoyed his Polka music. Ernest was well known for his love of horses. Above everything, Ernie enjoyed spending time with his family.

Survivors are his wife Marjorie Wollenberg and his five children, LaDonna Walters of Waverly, NE, Kevin (Cindy) Wollenberg of Chester, NE, Janice Wollenberg of Topeka, KS, Sandra (Kale) Rottinghaus of Beatrice NE, and Lisa (Alex) DeLuna of Stewartsville, MO, his three sisters, Elsie Shaw of Mandan, ND, Edna Niemeyer of Omaha, NE, and Elaine London of Paoli, PA, twelve grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents August and Sophie Wollenberg, son Lonnie Wollenberg, and grandson Jared Rottinghaus, sisters Eleanor Sapp and Ella Miller.

Visitation is Wednesday, September 4, 2019 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Gerdes-Meyer Funeral Home in Fairbury with family present. The service is Thursday, September 5, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. at the State Line Lutheran Church, Hollenberg, KS. Gerdes-Meyer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
