James Harms

James Allen Harms, 71, of Adams, passed away on Tuesday, September 7, 2021 at his home. He was born on November 13, 1949 in Beatrice to Roy and Viola (Meints) Harms. He graduated from Adams High School in 1967. He served in the U.S. Marines from 1970 to 1972. On September 2, 1972 he married Patricia Kempkes at St. Mary Catholic Church of St. Mary. He worked for the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad as a carman for 30 years. Jim enjoyed hunting, fishing, looking at tractors, collecting things, and spending time with his grandchildren.
Survivors include his spouse Patricia Harms of Adams; son, Jeff Harms of Sterling; daughters, Becky (Ryan ) McAuliffe, Rachel (Mark) Horstman, and Sarah (Ryan) Bredthauer all of Sterling; ten grandchildren, Jessa, Jack, Sam, Ridge, Callen, Brody, Kade, Reese, Will, and Mathis; sisters, Mary (Loren ) Huls of Pickrell and Diane (Dennis) Harms of Adams; brother, Daniel (Sharon) Harms of Hickman; brothers-in-law, Bob (Jan) Kempkes of Sandown, NH, Don Kempkes of Lincoln, Rick (Ardi) Kempkes of Douglas, Dave (Ann) Kempkes of Imperial; sisters-in-laws, Rosie (Darrel) VerMaas of Hickman, MariLyn Bailey of Dwight, Christy (Gary) Adams of Lyons, CO; nieces and nephews; mother-in-law, Rosella Kempkes of Adams. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Viola (Meints) Harms; father-in-law, Alfred Kempkes; grandson, Blake Masur; sister-in-law, Deb Kempkes; brothers-in-law, Guy Mulder and Ted Bailey.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M. on Friday, September 10, 2021 at Immanuel Lutheran Church of rural Sterling with Pastor Marcel Kohlmeyer officiating. Military rites will be conducted by Harm Sangen Post #140 of the Sterling American Legion and the U.S. Marine Honor Guard. A family prayer service will be held at 2:30 P.M. Friday in the fellowship room of the church. Cremation will follow the service and inurnment of the cremains will be on Saturday, November 13, 2021 at the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery of rural Sterling. The body will lie in state at the Zink-Fox Funeral Home on Thursday, September 9th, from 9:00 A.M. until 8:00 P.M. and then at the church one hour prior to the service on Friday.
