BEATRICE – The Kansas Highway Patrol investigated a pedestrian death that happened in the northeast part of the state during the early evening hours.

The KHP says the victim was crossing south on U.S. Highway 77 in Riley County….when a southbound vehicle struck the pedestrian…who was then hit by a northbound vehicle.

Patrol officials identified the fatality victim as 77-year-old Thomas William McHugh, of Riley, Kansas.

The southbound vehicle….a 1997 Chevrolet Lumina…was driven by 63-year-old Stephen Lynn Williams, of Green, Kansas.  The northbound vehicle was a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado pickup driven by 20-year-old Jude Benson, of Clay Center, Kansas.

Williams and a passenger, 71-year-old Brenda Williams, were taken to Via Christi Hospital to be checked over for possible injuries.  Benson was not injured.  All of the vehicle occupants were using safety restraints.

The accident happened Friday at 6:05 p.m., at the junction of U.S. Highways 77 and 24…..about three miles east of Riley, Kansas.
