FAIRBURY, Neb — For 25 years, Ol’ Red 99-5 has proudly hosted a free community Thanksgiving meal at the Fairbury Elks Club, providing thousands of neighbors and families with a traditional holiday dinner thanks to the generosity of local sponsors and the helping hands of countless volunteers.

This year will mark the 25th and final Thanksgiving meal hosted by Ol’ Red 99-5. While the station has never had trouble finding generous volunteers to pitch in, long-time organizers Nichole, who has been part of every meal, and Trevor, who has helped for 23 years, and other employees have often sacrificed time with their own families to make the event possible.

“Ending this era is bittersweet,” said Trevor Steinmeyer. “We are incredibly grateful for the community support that has sustained this tradition for a quarter of a century. At the same time, we feel it is the right moment to step back and allow others the opportunity to carry it forward.”

Ol’ Red 99-5 emphasizes that while this year will be its last organizing the event, the door is wide open for an organization, group, or business to continue the Thanksgiving Day meal tradition. The station is eager to share its process, contacts, and guidance to help keep the tradition alive for future generations.

“We hope someone will see the value in continuing this wonderful tradition,” Nichole Scholl added. “It has always been about bringing people together, and that spirit doesn’t have to end.”

The final Ol’ Red 99-5 Community Thanksgiving Meal will be served this Thanksgiving Day 11-1 at the Fairbury Elks Club. All are welcome.
