Rubye Stewart
Rubye (Baker) Stewart was born November 22, 1928, in Smith Center, KS to Ray and Florence (Buck) Baker. Rubye passed away at the age of 96 on January 24, 2025. Rubye moved to Nebraska with her family at the age of 6 and attended schools at Union Center, Barneston, rural Blue Springs Country School and graduated from Blue Springs High School in 1947. She attended and graduated from Omaha Commercial Business School in 1948 and she started working at Dempster Windmill Manufacturing company in Beatrice, where she worked off and on for 40 plus years.
October 10, 1952, she married Richard (Dick) Stewart in Blue Springs, NE at the home of her parents. She and Dick had a daughter, Sandy, and a son, Rick. Rick and his wife Debbie had two daughters, Sarah and Reileigh, who were her pride and joy. She loved her entire family.
Rubye loved sports and was a champion bowler being the first lady to bowl over a 600 series in Beatrice and won many trophies, local and statewide. She also loved golf and has many trophies including a “hole in one” gold putter. Rubye loved her golfing companions, especially Joyce, Jan, and Marlene and they were a popular fixture on the golf course. She and Dick loved golfing together with friends.
One of Rubye’s favorite things was cook for other people. She did a lot of this. She was noted for her potato salad, Parmesan chicken casserole and barbecue meat balls. You could find her deep freeze full of all kinds of soups and anything you wanted to eat. Frozen strawberries and peaches were always in the freezer and she would gladly give some of these away.
Her husband, Dick, passed away April 11, 2007. They celebrated 50 years of marriage on October 10, 2002, with a big celebration. After he passed, Sandy suggested she get a
computer which she did and spent a lot of time on it. She wrote her life story which people loved to read and see all the old and new pictures. Before she got her computer, she did a lot
of cross stitching table cloths and scarfs and her work on them was perfect. After she got her computer she forgot about cross-stitching and to this day one large table cloth is still not
complete. She taught her granddaughters this talent and they would spend hours cross stitching with grandma.
