Thayer Central handles Deshler, sweeps in-county showdown
HEBRON, Neb. - In what’s become an annual affair over the past two decades, two Thayer County schools separated by less than 15 minutes of drive time meet up for a basketball doubleheader in the first two weeks of January. And this Saturday in Hebron, Thayer Central extended its recent run of success against Deshler in the all-time series, handily winning both games of the doubleheader in front of the home crowd.
GIRLS BASKETBALL: Thayer Central (7-2) defeats Deshler (4-6) 52-19
A dominant second quarter paved the way for the Titans to cruise to a comfortable win. Deshler had dominated the early stages of the all-time series, but the Dragons haven’t won in the series since 2017 – and the Titans have now won eight straight in the all-time series.
The Dragon offense remained completely dormant in the second quarter, and the Titans were terrific in all phases, scoring in transition and pulling off pinpoint passes to cut through the Deshler defense. Thayer Central shut out Deshler in the second quarter and though the Dragons were much improved in the third quarter, the hole was far too deep to overcome and the Titans cruised to a wire-to-wire win.
Reese Harms was the only Dragon to score in the first half and finished with five points, and Molley Drohman hit a pair of threes to lead the team with six points. Freshman Leah Havel had a standout game with 17 points for the Titans, Paige Tietjen scored 11 and Addie Marsh added nine.
BOYS BASKETBALL: Thayer Central (7-1) defeats Deshler (6-4) 48-26
On a night where Thayer Central recognized the 25-year anniversary of the Chester-Hubbell-Byron team that won the Nebraska D-2 state championship, the current high school basketball team in Thayer County put on a strong performance of their own. The two teams exchanged blows early, but the Titans scored the final nine points of the first quarter to take command and the Dragons could never muster enough of a comeback.
The Titans have been a picture of consistency this season: they entered this weekend averaging 48 points per game in their first six contests, and in both Friday night’s win over Superior and Saturday’s win over Deshler, Thayer Central scored exactly 48 points. Meanwhile, Thayer held Deshler to half its season scoring average of 53.6 points per game.
Center Carson Sieber had a strong all-around game for Deshler, leading the way with 14 points while top scorer Easton Nash scuffled to the tune of just three points. Sam Souerdyke starred as usual for Thayer Central with a game-high 21 points, while Brady Degenhardt scored ten and Lukas Kroll added eight.
