Mackenzie Vitosh's 18 kills ignites Diller-Odell to first semifinal since 2016
LINCOLN - Senior middle hitter Mackenzie Vitosh had a game-high 18 kills and No. 2 Diller-Odell swept No. 7 Humboldt-Table Rock-Steinauer, 25-18, 28-26, 25-11 (3-0), in the quarterfinals of the Nebraska School Activities Association Class D1 State Volleyball Tournament Thursday at Lincoln Southeast High School.
The Griffins led 23-19 in the second set, but the Titans won six of the next seven points before Diller-Odell fought them off and took the set. They've only lost five sets all season.
They finished with 11 service aces, two weeks after they had 18 aces against HTRS in the Pioneer Conference Tournament Championship match.
It was the third time the Griffins defeated the Titans this season.
Diller-Odell (34-1) will play No. 6 Hartington Cedar Catholic (19-12) at 11 a.m. Friday in their first semifinal appearance since 2016. That season they finished runner-up in Class C2.
The Trojans defeated No. 3 CWC, 26-24, 25-16, 25-12 (3-0).
Vitosh is currently second on the team in kills with 330 this season.
Senior middle hitter Emily Swanson added 12 kills and freshman outside hitter Karli Heidemann chipped in 11.
Junior setter Addison Heidemann, a walk-on commit to Iowa State, finished with 37 assists.
The Titans were led by junior middle hitter Kaitlyn Glathar's nine kills.
