BEATRICE – At long last, a trail section that spans much of east Beatrice will be constructed, next year.

The Beatrice City Council Monday night approved the bid of Caspers Construction, for the project, at a cost of about $1.34 million.  That was the lowest bid in a State of Nebraska bid-letting for the project, that will put in place a trail from the Big Blue Water Park to Hannibal Park.

A federal surface transportation grant was secured for the project back in April, of 2012.  The City of Beatrice share of the cost of trail construction will be 20-percent, or around $260,000.  Some engineering expense has also been incurred during the project planning period.  The cost of the project has been impacted by inflation.  Back in 2012, the cost of the work was estimated to be nearly $900,000.

Construction of the trail segment will leave the community with only one stretch remaining to connect the city in a complete loop of trails…..the area from Hannibal Park to the Homestead Trail along Dorsey Street.
