Marjorie E. “Marge” Bartels, 81, of Sterling died at Gold Crest Retirement Center in Adams on September 17, 2019. She was born December 30, 1937 at rural Vesta. She moved with her family to a farm near Sterling in 1942 and attended country school northwest of Sterling. She graduated from Sterling High School in 1955 and taught country school for three years. She married William A. “Bill’ Bartels on June 8, 1958 at St. John Lutheran Church of Sterling and they lived and farmed southwest of Sterling. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church of Sterling and held many offices in the women’s organizations of the church. She was also a member of the Sterling Legion Auxiliary, the Johnson County Hospital Board, the Red Hats Society, and the Silver Ridge Extension Club. In addition, she was active in Sterling PTA, Sterling School Association and served as Treasurer for Heartland District Women of the Word. She enjoyed quilting, painting, needle work, dominoes, cards and traveling.

Survivors include two daughters, Sharon (Robert) Bebout of Omaha and Mary (Jim) Erickson of Sterling; two sons, Alan (Crystal) Bartels of Wilton, IA and James (Mary-Ellen) Bartels of Bennington; 11 grandchildren, Ryan (Kaitlin), Michael and Marcie (Nick Blum) Bebout, Collin (Kaylyn) and Brendan (Katherine) Bartels, Ashtin (Nathaniel) Harris, Jamie (Andrew) Thomsen, Matthew and Micah Erickson and Michaela and Justin Bartels; four great-grandchildren, Charlotte Thomsen, Hayden, Hudson and Harlyn Bebout; two sisters, Donita Podtburg of Sterling and Betty (Richard) Zink of Douglas; two brothers-in-law, John (Carolyn) Bartels of Beatrice and David (Bonnie) Bartels of West Des Moines, IA; sister-in-law, Shirley Bartels of Sterling; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ben and Marie (Harms) Parde; her husband Bill Bartels, who died December 10, 2000; her sister, Janice Parde Aden Cole; three brothers-in-law, David Podtburg, Larry Cole and Charles Bartels.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, September 20, 2019 at St. John Lutheran Church of Sterling with Pastor Kevin Arndt and Pastor Doyle Karst officiating. Burial will be in the Sterling Cemetery. A family prayer service will be held at 10:15 A.M. at the church on Friday. A memorial has been established to the family’s choice with Erma Hazen in charge.
The body will lie in state at the Zink-Fox Funeral Home of Sterling from 12:00 noon to 8:00 P.M. on Thursday and at the church one hour preceding the services on Friday. The family will meet and greet friends and family from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. on Thursday at the funeral home. Zink-Fox Funeral Home of Sterling in charge of arrangements.
